One fateful day, while Gautama Rishi was away, Indra, driven by his desire and tempted by Ahalya's enchanting beauty, approached her. Disguised as Gautama Rishi, Indra deceitfully approached Ahalya and misbehaved with her. Ahalya, unaware of the truth, succumbed to Indra's advances.
Upon his return, Gautama Rishi sensed the betrayal and deceit that had taken place during his absence. His divine intuition revealed to him the true nature of the incident. Filled with sorrow, anger, and a sense of injustice, Gautama Rishi confronted Indra, revealing his true identity.
Enraged by the audacity of Indra's actions, Gautama Rishi cursed him and pronounced severe consequences. The curse decreed that Indra, the king of the Devas, would lose his strength, power, and glory. Furthermore, he would be plagued by misfortune, constantly living in fear and facing numerous obstacles and defeats.

Stripped of his divine attributes, Indra descended from his throne and wandered the earth in a state of remorse and penance.
